ABOUT PROJECT:
Meow Mumbai - The Bombay Cat Project is about a number of things to do with the cats in Mumbai, We wish to promote kitten and cat adoptions through the project and wish for Mumbai to turn into a feline loving city followed by the country. The BMC has a number of programmes for the health and birth control of stray dogs in the city, however the cat has taken a back seat in their plans. Individiuals and NGOS have undertaken the task of sterilisations and adoptions of cats across the city and contribute in their own way to the animals.
It seems to be a prejudice of a dog loving city and even the nation to shun cats for reasons that are absolutely ridiculous, we aim to remove these beliefs from the minds of people and sensitise them towards the cat population in the city. The city is seeing an explosion in the numbers of kittens and multiplication of cats and hence the sterilisation programme is very important as of now. We carry out 10 sterilisations a week on our end and do post operative care in homes of volunteers etc to keep the numbers down. We also have a wing of feline adoptions which is looked after our volunteer Shruti Shetty who is our resident cat expert.
We hope to see a rise in the numbers of kitten and cat adoptions and compassion towards this beautiful animal through this project..We also hope that more people can feed cats on a daily basis to keep their health up and minimise the numbers of cat casualities in terms of illnesses and accidents.
HOW TO ACT?
Steps that youngsters can undertake to make a difference/participate in project play:
Students all over the city campaign for us every single day, in colleges in their one on one interactions, by volunteering , by fostering , by spreading the word and changing peoples misconceptions about animals everyday. Students can form Animal Groups in Colleges, Can volunteer at shelters and teach their own neighbourhoods to be kind, we are looking at the next generation proffessional and entrepreneur to have come out of school an already compassionate individiual which cahnges the way they run businesses and changes communities at large.
