Sure, day school is fun, but it is the kids who go to boarding school who hold all the monopoly on fun.
No matter what its shortcomings, Karan Johar’s debutant extravaganza Student of the Year sure managed to nail hostel life right. Ditto for 3 Idiots. For the uninitiated, here’s why the boarding school kids have got the upperhand over day boarders:
Actually getting any privacy in the changing room was an unheard of concept
Getting some space to yourself in the crowded Mumbai local trains at rush hour would probably be easier.
You were gifted with a Harry Potter-like feeling of awesomeness every time you all sat down together to dine
Minus the cackling poltergeists, elves and owls, of course.
Knowing how to make your own bed was not an option
In fact, you are secretly convinced that you could nail the Bed Making Olympics, given the speed with which you can smoothen the bed covers into some semblance of tidiness. You know, if there was ever such a thing.
Likewise, waking up late in the morning wasn’t an option either
You’re pretty sure that you’ve missed out on an important part of the growing up process by not being able to just sleep in till late like all the other kids.
People automatically assume that all you did was attend midnight feasts the second you mention that you went to a boarding school
Every. Single. Time.
There’s nothing you valued more than those mini-breaks when you were allowed to go home
It was like the last day of Grade 10, Grade 12 and graduation exams all put together!
Sneaking into the guys’/girls' hostel isn’t even a big deal anymore
Been there, done that more times than you can count. You up for a real challenge? You ought to try sneaking in food from outside.
You’ve never known what it is like to have school cancelled because of heavy rains
Come rain or hail water, nothing came in the way of your education.
You didn’t judge people by their race, creed or caste
You judged them according to their personal hygiene and propensity to snore.
Stealing someone’s name tag is a perfectly acceptable reason to declare war for you
There’s mean, there’s petty and there’s just downright cruelty. Why would you do that? Why?!
Although the second you reached home, you started pining away for the chaos of your hostel
You can’t help it, that’s just the kind of impact boarding schools have on you. And you’d never trade it in for anything, ever.
