While it is true that Bollywood makes a whole lot more films that Hollywood every year, the fact remains that one in five releases is heavily “inspired” from a Hollywood film. Remember how Nasseruddin Shah and Randeep Hooda boycotted John Day because it was allegedly a rip off? Here are 5 Bollywood Movies That Are Horrible Hollywood Rip-Offs:
1. Hitch – Partner
Now even though Hitch wasn’t cinematic genius, it was an incredibly popular film. Also, Will Smith! However, the Salman Khan and Govinda starrer, Partner was stuff of nightmares. Salman hammed through the film and all one wanted to do was smack Govinda in the face. The fact that their scene by scene rip off of the original defied logic added insult to injury.
2. What Happens In Vegas – Ek Main Aur Ek Tu
We would have been completely okay even if both films weren’t made. We wonder what it is with Bollywood filmmakers that they have to pick up the worst of the lot. The Ashton Kutcher – Cameron Diaz starrer delivered a few laughs but Ek Main Aur Ek Tu just reinforced our belief in the fact that Kareena Kapoor and Imran Khan look like siblings and they definitely cannot party.
3. My Best Friend’s Wedding – Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai
The least Sanjay Gandhvi (director) could have done was change the name of the damn film. Despite having the exact same plot as the original film (the crafty gender flip made no difference at all), Sanjay Gandhvi, said My Best Friend’s Wedding provided less than 1% inspiration for the film.
4. Players – Italian Job
Forgive us our bias but we think Italian Job was a fantastic film. Players was in a whole different realm of rubbish. Abbas Mastan should have just stuck to the Race series. In the real world, Donald Sutherland, Mark Wahlberg, Edward Norton, Charlize Theron would demolish Abhishek Bachchan, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Bobby Deol, Vinod Khanna, Sonam Kapoor and Bipasha Basu, and they did!
5. When Harry Met Sally – Hum Tum
By the time Hum Tum was made, When Harry Met Sally was a cult romantic film. The Hollywood film wasn’t exactly great but had some great insights; Hum Tum on the other hand was just plain annoying. The number of times Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukherjee bump in to each other and make inane, vague conversation, just made us imagine them bumping in to a truck. Fast.
