5 Hollywood Actors Who Had To Bulk Up Majorly For A Movie Role

‘Coz steroids are for lesser men. Sprouting some serious muscle on a tight deadline might be a daunting task, but here’s a look at five Hollywood actors who turned buff on short notice and how they did it.
Celebrities are said to be paranoid about their appearance, but some aren’t afraid to pile on the pounds and muscle for the sake of a movie role. Here are five actors who bulked up majorly for a movie role and came out stronger - Pun intended:
His transformation into the hulking King Leonidas might have given birth to the 300 workout phenomenon, but the workout schedule charted for him to get there was nothing short of a Spartan task - The actor was sentenced to what he calls the 300-rep workout, which includes 25 pullups, 50 deadlifts with 135 pounds, 50 pushups, 50 jumps on a 24-inch box, 50 floor wipers, 50 single-arm clean-and-presses using a 36-pound kettle bell, and 25 more pullups without any breaks in between.
While it might be a popular consensus among the ladies that the demi-god has got the goods under the superhero suit, the actor was put on a strict diet to gain weight fast, which basically involved bucketloads of calories coupled with a split-routine. When asked, Hemsworth described his training period as exhausting; “I feel as if I’ve been busy, but all I’ve been doing is eating all day. Eating when you’re not hungry and taking in that amount of food is exhausting.”
Playing the antihero in the last ever Batman movie is a mighty task, and we guess it was just as well that Tom Hardy had a strong torso to shoulder it with, for which he was put on a punishing diet and workout regime under former US marine & trainer Patrick Monroe which involved ‘signaling’ and ‘muscle confusion’ to buff up in a short period.
A lot has been said about his performance as the Dark Knight, although we’ve always felt that his transformation from the emaciated Trevor Reznik in The Machinist to Bruce Wayne of Batman Begins itself was a worthy of an Oscar. The actor however claims that he enjoyed the transformation; “The director, Christopher Nolan, asked me to try and put on as much weight as I could because he would find it very difficult to convince the studio to cast me if I was a beanpole. In doing so I overdid it because I was enjoying gorging. I was straight into pizza and ice-cream and eating five meals in a sitting. In that short amount of time I did actually go from 121 pounds right back up to 180 pounds.”
Piling on 30 pounds on a deadline sounds like a daunting task, but what better motivation than the thought of a waiting fanbase of hysterical girls. While he spent most of his time in the gym, the former teen heartthrob admits, “The most challenging part of staying buff is the eating process. The interesting thing is it’s just as hard to maintain the weight gain as it was to put in on in the first place.”
