Celebrities and fashion designers have a bond that goes beyond a professional one. Though actors have the luxury of selecting outfits from various brands and designers, they do rely on trusted advice to help them finalise on the overall looks that will be talked about extensively and boost their image.
Fashion designers cum stylists have always played an important role in shaping up the ‘oomph’ quotient of celebrities and our Bollywood brigade is no exception. Here's a look at seven celebrities whose style files have been notched up by talented designers in the recent past.
1. Alia Bhatt - Masaba Gupta
They're best friends even when the shutterbugs are not watching. They're both young, talented and at the prime of their careers. Maybe all the similarities have helped them find common ground in the fashion sphere as well. Masaba's known for her quirky sense of style, forever dwelling into funky prints and colours. She redefined the sari when she introduced her version of the six yards, in prints of table fans and cows all over them. Masaba's current favourite is subdued yet spunky monotone theme and Bollywood's lapping it up already. Alia's walked the ramp for Masaba and sported her designs several times - a butt high mini dress in automobile print, fluorescent pants and even frilly salwar suits - off the runway too. A big thumbs up from us!
2. Kareena Kapoor - Manish Malhotra
No matter how experimental Bebo gets with her wardrobe, it's when she dons Manish Malhotra's gorgeous saris and opulent anarkalis that she gets the maximum compliments. And if a Manish outfit works for Kareena Kapoor, who are we to judge ? We’d just love to see her step out more often and we're talking India, not Switzerland, babe. Buzz is that neutral colour palettes and clean cuts are reserved for Kareena's western wear. When it comes to Manish's grand creations, Kareena insists on lively and bright Indian hues like fuchsia, magenta, red... the works. Manish, whose designs are one of the most copied designs by tailors across the globe, strikes a humble balance between grand and yet wearable. Translation: Intricate embroideries on pale chiffons or multiple borders on a simple kurta whose highlight is the construction. No wonder Bebo's crazy for his designs. We sure are.
3. Sonam Kapoor - Anamika Khanna
Sonam has all the designers in the country and abroad vying for her attention today. But when she started out, way back in 2007, she caught first the attention of the media with her sartorial fashion choices, courtesy Anamika Khanna creations. She carried off drape dresses, cut out anarkalis and dhoti saris designed by Anamika so beautifully that fashion critics instantly hailed her as the face of Indian fashion, and justifiably so. Anamika's USP is the quirk factor in her seemingly down to earth creations. Her signature mesh cutwork kurtis and jackets are on top of the list of every fashion loving socialite, because they know that if you don an Anamika outfit, the compliments are guaranteed.
4. Jacqueline Fernandez - Raakesh Agarwal
Jackky, we understand from her several interviews, doesn't have any favourites when it comes to designers. But if she's looking for a stunning dress that will show off her curves and yet make her look modest and stunning at the same time, she does not look beyond Raakesh's creations. A sequinned corset top with an attached skirt that has pre-stitched pleats and a thigh high slit is the designer's signature garment and Jackky's been spotted flaunting them more than just once. Raakesh publicly admits that he likes to blend Indian and Western wear, and likes it when stunning women show off their hot bods and not cover up in layers. Hmmm... we love his design philosophy.
5. Kangana Ranaut - Rajat Tangri
Kangana's always in tune with international trends and while we give the girl full credit for an inherent sense of style, we have to say that her good friend, fashion designer and stylist Rajat has a major role to play in building her reputation as a style icon over the last few years. Rajat unabashedly says that his clothes are for women who are extremely confident about their bodies and have a personality that will blow your mind. His outfits, he says, will be a wonderful addition to a lady who is already fit and fabulous. Wow! Kangy definitely fits the bill. She's often been spotted in his sharp and bold designs which have fetched her a lot of praise in the past and we're hoping to see Kangana wear more of Rajat's creations in the future.
6. Deepika Padukone - Gaurav Gupta
Dippy loves to dress up but it's only recently that's she's moved away from 'safe' silhouettes to dress up in more daring outfits, all thanks to designer Gaurav Gupta. For the uninitiated, GG's creations have been receiving a lot of praise from the swish set off late, who swear by his fabulous cuts and construction. Heck, even Hollywood's Lady Victoria Hervey wore one of this uber sexy design for the Golden Globes' after party this year, so we'd definitely put our money on this young designers' sketches, if we were you. Coming back to Deepika, her last red carpet appearance was in a jaw dropping GG sheer gold dress that made her look like a covetable Oscar trophy. Full marks to Gaurav for bringing Deepika out of her shell -- we for one definitely want to see more (pun intended) of this leggy lass.
7. Vidya Balan - Sabyasachi Mukherjee
The whole world knows that Vidya Balan was a fashion disaster till the time designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee waltzed into her life. From trying hard to impress with contemporary trends back in the day to finally gaining acceptance with Sabya's premium net, georgette and kalamkari saris and suits, the maverick designer helped Vidya get comfortable in her own shoes and turn a new leaf overnight. Sabya's designs are superhit trends by themselves and the fact that Bollywood's leading ladies make a beehive to bag a piece before they hit the stores speaks volumes about his work. The quiet genius that he is, Sabya made life so much easier for women when he introduced the sari ghaghra (a ready to wear ghagra with a sari like wrap). A champion of Indian handlooms, he also created the chotu sari (knee length) and brought back polka dots with a vengeance, so you can see why we're in awe of his designs.
