You’d have thought actors, more than anyone else, would be more mindful of the phrase that opportunity doesn’t knock twice; but as it turns out, some Bollywood stars have gone out of their way to slam the door shut in opportunity’s face.
Given that their livelihood depends on it, you’d have thought that Bollywood actors would be able to recognize a successful movie role when they saw one. Yet, for reasons best known to them, here’s a list of eight B-town stars who rejected incredibly successful movie roles:
Hrithik Roshan, Dil Chahta Hai
Ever wonder how Dil Chahta Hai would have turned out if it had Hrithik Roshan completing the adorable trio instead of Aamir Khan? Well, that’s one question we’ll all be left wondering about for eternity, seeing as Hrithik - whom the role was originally written for - turned it down, leaving the floor open for Aamir Khan.
Kareena Kapoor Khan, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam
While Kareena’s decision to turn down the 90s classic Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam was Aishwarya’s gain; Kareena repaid the favour by latching onto Madhur Bhandarkar’s Heroine after Aishwarya walked out midway. Given the box office state of the latter, it doesn’t take a genius to guess who had the last laugh.
Katrina Kaif, Barfi!
An award winning director and beau Ranbir Kapoor for a co-star; you’d have thought that Katrina would have leapt at the offer, but in a move that must have given her manager a couple of sleepless nights, Katrina turned down the role – Much to Ileana’s relief.
Shah Rukh Khan, Munnabhai MBBS
While we doubt that one less award winning movie must have made much of a dent in SRK’s kitty, but the world of cinema – and Sanjay Dutt’s career graph – have come out stronger for it.
Shah Rukh Khan
Kangna Ranaut, The Dirty Picture
Fine actress she may be, but we can only be devoutly grateful that Kangna decided that the role of Silk in The Dirty Picture was not up to her standards, with the movie eventually falling in Vidya Balan’s lap. Feelings that we are sure Kangna doesn’t share, given the cult status that the film went on to achieve.
Saif Ali Khan, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jaayenge
Ever imagined how life would have been if Saif had decided to take on the role of Raj in... Shudder. Forgive us for not completing the sentence but as it turns out, the thought of anyone else other than SRK playing Raj is too painful to even contemplate.
Saif Ali Khan
Kajol, 3 Idiots
Given her close friendship with Shah Rukh Khan, you’d have thought that Kajol would have known better than to turn down Rajkumar Hirani, but in a move that lived up to the title of the movie, Kajol rejected the role of Pia, which was then passed on to Kareena.
Shah Rukh Khan, Rang De Basanti
In what is clearly becoming a habit, SRK threw out the offered one of the roles of the 2006 ensemble hit Rang De Basanti. Although given how well R Madhavan embodied the role of Ajay Rathod, you won’t hear us complaining.
Shah Rukh Khan
