9 Flop Debutants Who Went On To Become Superstars!
May 20, 2014 @ 10:05 am
Failure can be harsh on the best of us; but fortunately for us, and for the world of cinema, these actors didn’t decide to give up on Bollywood altogether. Praise be!
Although we suspect that it is this tenacity to not give up on Bollywood that keeps people like Jackky Bhagnani going. Taking a look at the brighter side, here’s a list of nine Bollywood superstars who made it large despite starting out with flop debuts:
Ranbir Kapoor, Saawariya
The chips were always piled against Ranbir’s debut movie, given that it was constantly pitted against Farah Khan’s multi-starrer Om Shanti Om, but even the promise of Ranbir Kapoor in, (and more importantly, out) of a towel, failed to draw in the moolah. Fortunately, Ranbir just decided to shred his pink slip and went on to deliver multi-crore hits in the form of Rockstar and later Barfi!
Aditya Roy Kapur, London Dreams
You can probably be forgiven if the fact that Aditya Roy Kapur starred in London Dreams came as news to you. While Action Replayy and Guzaarish kept him busy through 2010, it is only in 2013 that he struck gold with Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and cemented his position with Aashiqui 2.

Katrina Kaif, Boom
‘A soft-porn venture masquerading as clever, outside-the-box cinema,’ is probably not how you’d want your big debut movie to be remembered, but fortunately for Katrina, Salman Khan happened and there has been no turning back ever since.
Emraan Hashmi, Footpath
Don’t remember the name? Don’t worry, we are pretty sure that Emraan Hashmi is trying very hard not to either. Luckily, 2004 had Murder in store for him post which his Bollywood dreams took off.

Madhuri Dixit, Abodh
A movie that even the more dedicated Madhuri fans would be hard put to recall, Madhuri deserves kudos for not letting the ensuing string of flops pull her down until the 1988 movie Tezaab awarded her her first bonafide hit.
Rani Mukherjee, Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat
The 1997 dud Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat might have spelled doom for Shadab Khan’s career, but after a brief hiatus to complete her education, Rani found it in her to give Bollywood another try and has been smiling ever since.
Salman Khan, Biwi Ho Toh Aisi
The history of Bollywood would have been monumentally different had Salman Khan decided to call it quits when his debut movie Biwi Ho Toh Aisi bombed majorly. As it happens, Salman decided to silence his detractors and went on to star in Maine Pyaar Kiya, that to date, remains one of India’s highest grossing films.
Sonam Kapoor, Saawariya
While Ranbir went on to reverse his fate with career defining roles post Saawariya, Sonam can credit sheer pluck and her propensity to make extremely ridiculous statements on Karan Johar’s couch for sparing her after a close shave with the failed star kids club.
Saif Ali Khan, Parampaara
Critic reviews to his debut film, Parampaara, were harsh to say the least but Saif hung in there and kept at it until he finally got a breakthrough two years later with Yeh Dillagi. Which is just as well, because showbiz would have come out poorer for it.
