Consider a few events, now, etched in history that must keep reminding us of the depravity of man. 

Gaurav Sadanand Raut, 22, strangulated himself to death in his hostel room in Nashik's Maratha Vidya Prasarak Samaj Medical College. Although the police detained four students, the local NCP MLA, Vasant Pawar, also the general secretary of the college body denied that the student had been ragged. 

Aman Kachroo, 19, a first year student of Dr Rajendra Prasad Medical College, had repeatedly complained to his parents about the brutal ragging that took place on the Medical College campus — often by completely drunk third-year students. On Friday night and Saturday morning, the boy was beaten so badly that he died of brain hemorrhage. 

Mohan Karthik Tripathy, 19, hanged himself from a ceiling fan in his hostel room at the SKR Engineering College in Tambaram, Tamil Nadu. His written complaint about ragging to the college authorities had gone unheeded. He had been forced to bathe in his own urine. 

But we can all sigh to the fact that India is not the worst effected country and we have successfully been able to deal with the phenomena by infusing culture and conscience.

This damaging form of interaction between seniors and juniors did not percolate into the Indian education society until the Brits set port, in India. Earlier the education system encouraged mutuality but then what began to happen in the Anglo-Scottish universities, spread rampantly across the country. However, let’s not blame them for the innovativeness of our Indian students, in the years that followed. 

Thanks to the recent law, colleges are paying heed to the issue. But just in case you feel you or your fellow students are being subject to such unhealthiness, be sure to have in handy the phone numbers, of the members of your universities, anti-ragging squad. Remember; if they threaten you, their threats will be as empty as their wallets, after the law has dealt with them.
