We all look up to our teachers. We look to anybody who adds value to our otherwise drab lives. Teachers are the people we grow with, teachers know things about us that we aren’t sure about; Teachers are the mentors we constantly look for and the friends we need our friends to be.  With all that they mean to us, loving our teachers isn’t too difficult is it?

I am 18 years old and studying in Delhi University. I am a diligent student and I have always been extremely focused on my studies. I don’t even have a boyfriend, in fact I find boys my age extremely immature and shallow. I am generally not very attracted to anyone easily, except lately, I have the hugest crush on my professor. It’s not like he is old, he has just finished his Masters degree a year ago and from what I hear, is single. At a college outing, we spoke at length about life and about our likes/dislikes. I felt extremely special around him and I have a feeling that he’s into me. What should I do?

Dear Shambhavi,

You are walking on thin ice. I’m sorry; I had to get that motherly statement out of my system before I can start to process your problem. You are rather young girl with hopes and aspirations and I’m sure your professor has a long, fulfilling career ahead of him, a relationship between a teacher and a student is a strict no-no, especially when you are just an undergraduate. Any outward expressions of interest either from you or him, could get you’ll into serious trouble. I can understand the fact that you are enamored by his persona but keep your distance. There is no harm in harboring a crush on your cute professor but taking it any further isn’t kosher. If you think you are made for each other, as most people in your situation would, then wait for a couple of years, till you graduate, and you can pick up the embers of your love from there. Also, bear in mind that he may just be a friendly man and is trying to fit in to the student community and you maybe misreading his “signs”. I’m sorry if I was too harsh but wouldn’t you rather have a teacher who told you the truth rather than someone who would let you fail?
