`Victory` Donor!

The verdict is out: Vicky Donor is a hit. Quite a coup for a film starring two debutantes and a first time producer. Read on to find out what the audience and critics have to say about the film.

`Victory` Donor!

Out of the dozens of rom coms that Bollywood churns up every year, it is only a Jab We Met or an Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani that manages to garner both audience appreciation and the critics’ stamp of approval. And the latest in this somewhat short list is Vicky Donor. Making a successful comedy about sperm donation is no small feat; it could have easily gone awry, on the strength of all the dialogues with double meaning alone (read Kya Kool Hai Hum). But John Abraham played his cards well. Seriously, who would have thought behind all those pounds of muscles (88 kg, last we heard) lay the brains of a mean producer? And one of the best decisions he made was to cast Ayushmann Khurana as the lead. As the charming Punjabi puttar, he won over hearts from the day the first promo was out. Backed by the convincing Annu Kapoor and cute Yami Gupta, this film has made it to the hit list. Made on a budget of Rs 5.23 crore, it grossed Rs 7.85 crore on the opening weekend itself! Not to mention the whooping $42,000 it collected in the United States.

The film hits the right chords, not just with the audience but with the critics too! Times of India rated it as 3.5 and said, “Kudos to John Abraham for his brave maiden production. Ayushmann Khurana is natural and impressive while Yami Gupta is a sheer delight o watch, emoting effortlessly.” Taran Adarsh concurs, “Vicky Donor is a small film with a big heart. Witty, funny and also emotional, it is forward-thinking, progressive commercial cinema which vastly enlightens and hugely entertains!” Anupama Chopra from Hindustan Times adds, “Vicky Donor is one of those rare Hindi films that work purely on the strength of writing and performances. There are no crutches here of stars, sets, styling or foreign locations.”

And if that ain’t enough, we list the top three reasons why you SHOULDn’t give Vicky Donor a miss:

1. It stars Ayushmann Khurana, the winner of Roadies Season 2. No mean feat, we assure you. In fact, we suspect it is all those hoops that Raghu made him dance through that has toughened him up for Bollywood. Surely Raghu’s shedding a tear somewhere.

2. Honestly, when was the last time you watched a Hindi film and went ROTFL? Probably not since Garam Masala and Hera Pheri. So go watch it for the laughs alone.

3. It might never make it to your TV sets. If The Dirty Picture is deemed unfit after 59 cuts, this movie – if it ever is aired on TV – will be one long string of beeps!
