Imagine Amitabh Bachchan playing a notorious businessman with underworld connections in New York in 1920’s.

With luxurious mansions, champagne popping, vibrantly dressed people dancing in hysteria of affluence, showmen and glamour girls entertaining the rich and famous; the trailer really tempts one to watch the film upon its release.

I am talking about one of the most anticipated films in Hollywood this year, Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic American novel, The Great Gatsby.

I came across the trailer of the film and I couldn’t wait to see what this film had to offer. This would at least be my hundredth viewing of the trailer and I am still incredibly fascinated. In two and a half minutes you can make out that the film has a distinct texture of the 20’s. With luxurious mansions, champagne popping, vibrantly dressed people dancing in hysteria of affluence, showmen and glamour girls entertaining the rich and famous; the trailer really tempts one to watch the film upon its release.

A lot of attention has been paid to recreate the life and times of New Yorkers from that era. The music and the excerpts from the dialogues of film define the high voltage drama it contains. Fitzgerald’s novel is an established classic piece of literature and for the film to match up to it will not be easy.

The novel is set in post World War I, America, where during the roaring 20’s; extravagance, indulgence and excess was a trait of the rich and the famous. Once such mysteriously rich and overindulgent man is Jay Gatsby, known in the New York circuit for his extravagant parties. His tragic story is told through Nick, a Yale graduate and World War I veteran who is in awe of Gatsby. As Nick explores the different facets of this tragic protagonist, so do the readers.

The film has an attractive cast with Toby Maguire from Spiderman as Nick and Amitabh Bachchan as Gatsby’s business associate Meyer Wolfsheim. Leoardo Di Caprio who plays the role of Jay Gatsby is the most versatile actor we have seen in a while. From playing a conman in Catch Me if You Can; a millionaire, profiteer and filmmaker with OCDs in The Aviator; an undercover cop in The Departed; a diamond smuggler in Blood Diamond to a plantation owner in Django Unchained; Di Caprio has some acclaimed and memorable roles behind him which already make him a frontrunner in the hall of the greatest actors of all time.

Both the theatrical trailers of the film are gathering millions of views online. The film was initially supposed to release last Christmas but will now hit the theatres only in March.

What stays with the viewer is Jack White’s theme song ‘Love is Blindness’ used in the trailer. They lyrics and music give the essence of the glorious yet tragic life of Gatsby and what the viewers should expect from the film.
