Race 2: A queer fruit salad

We all know that this year there are a lot of sequels that we have to prepare ourselves for, but Race 2 was a start that was hardly alluring.

Race 2: A queer fruit salad
The character of Deepika Padukone could have sketched out by a ten year old and the sexual innuendo shared between Ameesha Patel and Anil Kapoor borders on being nauseating!

Nonetheless, Abbas Mustan’s choice of glamorous stars and reckless action sequences may be an offer that you cannot refuse; so, here is what you must be warned about:

Spread across many cities, are the posters of stars that have lent their name to this production, seemingly intimidating and well-paid; Saif Ali Khan and Anil Kapoor, carrying forward their characters from the first film, act opposite a fresh new line-up of Deepika Padukone, John Abraham, Jacqueline Fernandez and Ameesha Patel. Saif Ali khan characterizes the rich businessman Ranveer Singh, who has a life changing proposal for Armaan Malik (John Abraham) and his sister, Aleena (Deepika Padukone). While dear ol’ Jacqueline Fernandez plays the role of John Abraham’s girlfriend, Omisha. As the plot is played out, RD aka Anil Kapoor and his assistant Cherry, played by Ameesha Patel, join in.

As a typical Abbas – Mustan film, Race 2 is glossy, fast paced and extremely detached from any semblance of reality. While these qualities worked for the first film, the second offering was absolutely nonsensical. The film ignored the need of an exposition; the audience is left wondering how John Abraham went from being an ordinary street fighter to being a billionaire crime lord or where Jacqueline Fernandez comes from. The character of Deepika Padukone could have sketched out by a ten year old and the sexual innuendo shared between Ameesha Patel and Anil Kapoor borders on being nauseating! Like the first film, Race 2 tries to incorporate a series of twists and anti climaxes but fails on all accounts either due to bad placement or the fact that they were utterly confusing.

A random opportunity to seek inspiration urged me to ask a fellow-traveler of the local trains as to why he would want to see Race 2. His answer did not shock me, but my reply did shock him. He said he was die-hard fan of action sequences whether they are onscreen or off-screen. He enjoyed the car chases and the explosions. If you can relate to that, you would be very disappointed at the end of this film because this time the tardy white collared crimes have overtaken the reckless ones.

Yet, if you suffer from Shirt Plucking Insomnia then, our Dear John Abraham will certainly give you many sleepless nights. Nevertheless, he has worked well on himself as an actor to reinvent his screen presence in a character already played by him in Dhoom. His lady love Jacqueline Fernandez does less than her make-up artist to get our attention, but more than her dismal screen presence, Deepika Padukone makes for a disappointing show of talent.

If there are a few essentials that get this film to cross borderline, it would be the unfailing attempts of Saif Ali Khan in playing the devil’s advocate. All in all; if they say first is the worst, second is the best and third is the one with the golden chest then, they hadn’t heard of sequels. We certainly missed Race.
