This film that comes from the Dharma Productions stable, directed by Ayan Mukherji, is highly anticipated not just because of the off screen controversies that surround the lead actors but also because this film seems like it is of the breed of Karan Johar’s favoured K3G brand of filmmaking. This film seems to bring in elements of old school romance with a twist of reckless abandon. While there are several films that fit a similar mould, for example Love Aaj Kal, Break Ke Baad, Cocktail, this film has a cast that has been smartly put together to bring in a sort of realism that the aforementioned films have only strived towards.

The trailer of the film quickly establishes the quintessential qualities of all the characters; Ranbir Kapoor plays Bunny who is the self indulgent, free thinking, you only live once boy of the nineties, Deepika Padukone plays the role of the hesistant and boorish “scholar Naina Talwar”, while this character reminded us a little too much of Diana Penty from Cocktail, the stylist must be given her due of doing a stellar job on modeling Deepika around this character. The supporting cast includes Aditya Roy Kapur, Avi, who plays Ranbir Kapoor’s best friend, his portrayal of the role is reminiscent of what he delivered in London Dreams and Kalki Koechlin, Aditi, who is at her explosive best. Kalki embodies the role of the quirky, edgy and slightly rough around the edges Aditi convincingly. The music showcased in the trailer of the film is upbeat, peppy and definitely makes you want to get up and groove. We expect “Batameez Dil” to be the next chart topping Bollywood number.

While at the first instance, the plot of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani seems to be based on the wedding of Aditi and Avi, it seems more to do with the journey of Ranbir and Deepika and the unraveling of their characters. The trailer of the film has all the necessary romantic film clichés from Bunny helping Naina on to the train circa DDLJ to cheesy dialogues, exotic locales and larger than life dance sequences. As pretty and cinematic as the film looks, it still looks far from promising due to the apparent run of mill treatment of the film.

The film seems to take off from where Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Wake Up Sid left off with Ranbir playing the uninspired partying youngster and Deepika doing her regular rounds of dancing, singing and looking dainty. We might be jumping the gun here but Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani looks more like a popcorn accompaniment than an offbeat, interesting love story.
