Aishwarya Rai Bachchan for Ambassador!
September 25, 2012 @ 00:00 am
The last we heard about Aishwarya Rai Bachchan were the constant comparisons made by the media between her and Kareena Kapoor; then we came to know that Aishwarya had been dropped from Heroine because she was pregnant.
Thereafter, innumerable jokes flooded the net like: Finally, a Phoenix has risen from the “Ash’s” of the Bachchan family.
Now, news comes straight from the United Nations about their appointment of the actress as their goodwill ambassador for the cause of AIDS awareness. While this was declared on Monday, we are still mulling over the details of her new job profile; although it is not completely clear, they will use her stardom for a wider appeal for their work, and she would have to help in upholding their mission of stopping HIV infections in children by increasing access to anti-retroviral treatment.
As we know, the United Nations is departmentalized according to specific target groups; hence Aishwarya, herself a mother now, would be working with UN program on HIV/AIDS or UNAIDS. She says, “I will initially be like a student, holding the hand of the organization which will lead me to the real picture on the ground.” So, we guess the UN has found a solution in tune with the old adage; fight fire with fire.
UNAIDS declared that Aishwarya Rai would be promoting their mission in 22 countries, India being one of them; since, their current calculations reveal that India accounts for more than 90 percent of fresh cases among children.
We hope that Aishwarya Rai can harness her clout as an international celebrity and help people around the world be more informed and educated about AIDS. We clink our glasses to the multifaceted woman that she is!
