The last ace in a director’s bag of tricks; the music of an action thriller should titillate you, get you pumping the air in the crucial moments and leave your nails bitten off in suspense.

Race 2: Been There, Heard That
We went in expecting an encore of 2008’s stellar tracklist. And we came out with a couple of ho-hum tracks and some hasty remixes.

With that yardstick in mind, does Race 2 make the cut?

Braving the January jinx, Pritam da has made a re-entry in Abbas Mustan’s volatile world of exploding cars and thrill-a-minute suspense. We went in expecting an encore of 2008’s stellar tracklist. And we came out with a couple of ho-hum tracks and some hasty remixes. Where Pehli Nazar Mein and Zara Zara Touch Me became a permanent fixture in our music playlists; Be Intehaan and Party On My Mind don’t quite inspire you to hit the replay button.

Be Intehaan: We have seen Aatif Aslam deliver one Tera Hone Laga Hoon after the other, which is why Be Intehaan comes as a bit of a letdown. Sure, the love ballad ticks all boxes with its hummable background score and the feel good lyrics; but many ended up billing it as Pehli Nazar Mein’s country cousin. Not quite up to Aatif Aslam’s usual towering standards.

Allah Duhai Hai: Every bit as addictive as the original, the title track hands over the microphone to Atif Aslam, Vishal Dadlani and Anushka Manchanda. The remixed track reels you in with its rock techno beats and sets the tone for the wholesome thrills that Abbas and Mustan pride themselves on.

Lat Lag Gayee: Emerging as a decisive winner in a somewhat uninspiring album; Lat Lag Gayee makes for the sensual substitute of Zara Zara Touch Me. Even if it weren’t for Jacqueline’s swishy skirts and the come hither looks, Shalmali Kholgade’s sultry vocals and the accompanying lusty lyrics take the oomph factor to a whole new level.

Party On My Mind: Party on My Mind has had a good run on the charts; if only for the fact that the background score reminds you of a hundred other party songs. We hungrily devoured the song after getting a glimpse of Yo Yo Honey Singh’s name; only to find out that it is located a safe light-year away from Angreji Beat. However, after getting an eyeful of Deepika Padukone in the video, we doubt anyone is complaining!

Our Verdict: Still clearly haunted by the ghosts of its predecessor, the album works in bits and pieces but as a whole, fails to pull through. Pritam, being Pritam, has obligingly put together a foot tapping album; albeit one that leaves you with an unmistakeable sense of déjà vu.
