Sumit Sangwan lost out to his Brazilian opponent, Yamaguchi Falcoa Florentino, in what many considered a controversial final round of the 81kg Men's Light Heavy competition.

On Second Thoughts

Nevertheless, it was a close call for the Indian boxer who lost 14-15. There were voices from several quarters that stated, in reference to points not being awarded to Sangwan that the decisions of the referee were like “day light robbery”. The entire Indian contingent was disappointed; followed by a quick sucession of twitter posts, by Mr. Ajay Maken, that documented the steps taken by his ministry.

His twitter posts state: “Our Cuban coach was protesting at the top of his voice. Everyone felt SUMIT should have been declared a winner”; and, “Sumit Sangwan Bout; Officially the protest is lodged. Let us hope for justice.”

Well, the complaint lodged was in vain; and the decision of the Greek referee, Nikolaos Poutachadis, has been confirmed final. However, we are proud of the bright new talent that Indian boxing has found; and are sure that Sumit Sangwan will put all of it aside for a promising future.
