On This Day, Smack That by Akon featuring Eminem went No. 1 on the UK singles chart. Here's the Music Video:
Aliaune Damala Badara Akon Thiam; in short, Akon made his entry into the American music industry in 2004 with the release of his first album “Trouble”. How many of you remember the song “Lonely”; well, I guess that was the best option that album had to offer. Still, let us not get into the details, or else we’ll be battling to get the tune out of heads for the rest of the day. Besides, why else would Guinness declare him the #1 selling artists for master ringtones in the world?
There is no denying that Akon has a lot to offer and his music appeals to a universal audience. However, there is way of doing that in today’s market; let’s see whether we can let you in on that strategy. When “Trouble” was spun on DJ tables, put together with songs like “Lonely”, “Belly Dancer”, “Pot of Gold” and “Ghetto”, people were swallowed in the resulting cyclone, only to be released as fans. Akon had successfully made it on the charts.
Once you get a ranking on the US and UK charts then you needn’t bother about Asia, because you’re sure to have appealed to Asians automatically. What Akon had to worry about was getting a fan following in Australia and the other cricketing island in the Pacific, New Zealand. So, he caught up with Pacific rapper Savage, who is popular amongst Australians and New Zealanders; they cut single called “Moonshine”, which won him the Pacific fans too. By 2005, even Germany had caught up with the Mr. Lonely.
While he was already being played during Ganesh Chaturti and all the way through Diwali, there were some who still couldn’t get his name and would keep asking “Aye Kon?”However, in 2006 with the release of “Konvicted” he became a household name because that year during Diwali, his intentions were known to all through the song “I Wanna Love You”. Another song that was played incessantly was “Smack That” featuring Eminem, it went on to top the UK charts and that happened today.
