This Day In Music - 15th August - Independence Day Special

On a day like today, there is nothing like listening to patriotic songs and holding our heads up in pride. Here’s our list of the most popular patriotic songs that you must listen to. Stay Proud, Stay Raw.

1. Aye Watan, Aye Watan - Shaheed:

This is the first of the Bhagat Singh biopics to hit the Indian screen. Manoj Kumar does a brilliant job in the lead. There are two other songs in this movie ('Sarfaroshi ki tamanna' and 'Mera Rang De Basanti chola'), which have captured the Indian mind as has this song. The life of Bhagat Singh has been the subject of many more Bollywood movies, but none of them could hold a candle to this 1965 classic.

2. Yeh Jo Des Hai Tera - Swades:

A.R. Rahman has done some wonderful non-movie compositions with freedom and patriotism as the theme ('Vande Mataram'). This 'Swades' song represents the craving one has for his motherland. It is actually a lament dressed as melody.

3. Vande Mataram by Lata Mangeshkar:

Sung by Lata Mangeshkar, this song takes patriotism to a new high. Composed by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, this is the National Song of India.

4. Mere Desh Ki Dharti - Upkar:

Mere Desh ki Dharti is sung by Mahendra Kapoor and it talks about the patriotism to the soil. Mahendra Kapoor became most closely associated with patriotic songs and was also awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India.

5. Maa Tujhe Salaam by A.R. Rahman:

Released on the Golden Jubilee anniversary of India's independence and has been instrumental in instilling a sense of patriotic pride and national unity amongst the people of India. Ever since release, both the album and its title song "Maa Tujhe Salaam" have had a profoundly positive and unifying impact on the nationalistic and patriotic mood of the country.
